9 September 21 Road trip to Glacier National Park
9 September 21
I got on the road around 2 pm. I had dropped Pete off at the kennel earlier. I feel bad about him being there while Wiggin gets to come along on the latest adventure. Pete doesn't do well in the car. It takes him a long time to settle down. When he goes in the car I put the backseat down and he just stands in the middle back there for miles. He also doesn't do well when it is hot and we are currently having record heat for September. Today's 96° was a record for SLC. I would have seriously considered bringing him if not for the heat. Two of the Airbnb's I'm staying in allow pets. The other one said it would be okay if I put Wiggin in a kennel. Knowing that I found a used one at Savers a few days ago and packed it for the trip.
I drove straight to Pocatello. I searched online and found an attraction there that had good ratings. It appeared to be a corn maze harvest festival kinda thing. When I got there it was basically a run down farm with a vegetable stand and not even a good one at that. I got back on the road and drove on to Blackfoot Idaho and stopped at the Homestead Restaurant for a late lunch. I had a hot roast beef sandwich that wasn't that good.
After lunch I drove to the Airbnb. It was easy to find and though it was located close to a railroad it was a minor local track used for a grain mill. I originally parked in the front of the place but saw a sign stating that guest parking was in the rear. There was actually a sign for the parking spot for each room. Spot two was mine. I was able to get in the back door with the code the host provided. The room consisted of a small bedroom and a small kitchen. It was pretty old and run down but clean.
I cleaned up a bit and rested for a few minutes.
The host had informed me that the Easter Idaho State Fair was going on that week so I decided to check it out. It was located about 2 miles east of the Airbnb so I drove. Wow, it was a lot bigger than I expected. I would say it rivaled the Oklahoma State Fair. It was a lot bigger than the Utah State Fair. I bet there were at least a hundred places to eat. That is the one thing I remember most about the Oklahoma State Fair growing up. There were so many places to eat. Most of the places were different churches. I'm not sure if they do that any more. Maybe they aren't even allowed because of Separation of Church and State. If that is the case Okies lost out because there were some good vittles as I recall. I walked around the grounds for a couple of hours. Being Eastern Idaho there was a lot of farm machinery. I saw a huge drill. Both sides folded up over the middle for transport but it was still at least 14 feet wide. It took me a while to decide what to eat since the options were unlimited. I finally came across a booth selling Dutch Oven Dinners. Pork roast, potatoes and green beans. I found a table and pigged out. After finishing my dinner I made my way back to the gate I had come through and walked the half mile or so back to the car. Wiggin was sleeping soundly in the front passenger's seat when I got there. He is getting deaf and it is pretty easy to sneak up on him now.
I drove back to the Airbnb and grabbed a beer from my ice cooler and sat outside drinking it while Wiggin explored the lawn. In his old age he doesn't wander far but if he gets out of sight for five minutes I get nervous and have to go look for him.
After finishing the beer I went into the room and called it a night.
